The Alberta SPCA’s Humane Awards recognize Alberta teachers and students who inspire others to show compassion for animals, people and the environment through example and leadership.

We are pleased to announce this year’s Humane Award recipient!

The Animal Rescue Crew at F.R. Haythorne Junior High in Sherwood Park is working to enhance animal welfare in the province. The work of the Crew at one time done by an extra-curricular club, is now achieved primarily through an option course providing greater opportunity for more students to learn more about animals, and how to enhance their well-being through awareness and service learning.

With over 100 students involved, the Animal Rescue Crew has raised over $10,000 for local organizations that help animals. In addition to their highly successful fundraising initiatives, the group has invited a number of guest speakers to enhance student learning and researched and critically discussed a variety of animal issues. Students have learned more about the human-animal bond and how animals and people mutually benefit from interaction.Students have also explored and discussed the “Five Freedoms” for animals, created posters to promote their school’s recycling program, and studied Dr. Jane Goodall’s conservation efforts.

Sylvia MacInnes, the lead teacher who started the Animal Rescue Club a number of years ago is understandably proud of her students and so appreciative of the support from members of her staff.  The Animal Rescue Crew provides a space for students to learn and understand that their actions affect others, animals and the environment and empowers them to make positive choices.
