University Animal Welfare Courses, Programs & Centers

Several universities offer programs in animal welfare. Here is a list of currently available programs and courses. These programs are subject to change. To ensure you have the most recent information, contact the specific educational institute directly.

Thompson Rivers University

This distance education program is for animal care givers who are interested in upgrading their work skills, and for individuals interested in a career in Animal Welfare. The Program was jointly developed by TRU and the BC SPCA.

University of British Columbia

This is a graduate program with most students completing a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Animal Science specializing in Animal Welfare. There are also some undergraduate courses offered as well as an undergraduate thesis.

Offered as an extension to the online Equine Science certificate program, the Equine Welfare Certificate provides access to current research to evidence-based practice regarding equine welfare. The course encompasses all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, nutrition, disease prevention, responsible care, humane handling and where necessary, humane euthanasia.

Located at the University of Guelph, the Centre promotes animal welfare through research and education. The Centre’s expertise is drawn from its unique mix of intellectual and research disciplines including animal and poultry science, veterinary medicine, psychology, philosophy, genetics and zoology.

Situated at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, the Centre provides service, research, and education in the welfare of dogs, cats, horses and wildlife. The focus of this work is always to provide tangible benefits to the animals. The Centre offers two courses within the veterinary curriculum: Animal Behaviour and Welfare (a first year course) and a fourth year rotation, Issues in Animal Welfare.
