The Five Needs of Animals

This six-part interactive video series, hosted by Alberta SPCA Animal Ambassador, Gracie, explores the needs of animals, how animals feel (affective state) when their needs are met, and our responsibility to meet these needs. Students will also be encouraged to consider their own needs and affective states.

Included with the videos are lessons that contain discussion questions and cross-curricular activities.

The Five Needs of Animals is based on the Five Domains Model (Mellor & Reid, 1994), an internationally recognized model developed to assess the welfare of animals. It was recently updated to include provisions that recognize the impact of people’s interactions with animals (Mellor et al., 2020).
